After playing for many Calgary weddings as soloists, Barb and Laurie formed Occasional Notes in 2008 by combining their creative talents – an endeavour that has proved to be the most fulfilling part of their careers as musicians.
Barb studied at the University of Alberta and Calgary's Mount Royal College at the Conservatory and is an Associate with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Barb won music scholarships with the Royal Conservatory of Music Alumni Association for achieving the highest marks at the Associate level for both pedagogy and practical categories. She has guided many students through to the Associate level and enjoyed helping students of all ages fulfill their dreams of learning to play the piano.
Laurie has a B.A. from the University of Calgary majoring in Psychology, a great resource for some pre wedding situations. Laurie can ease frazzled nerves with her calm and professional council. Laurie also studied with the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and learned to teach with the guidance of her mother, Marion Jacobs, who also taught piano and organ in the Calgary area. Laurie has spent many years working as a church musician as well as an accompanist for school choirs and Calgary area weddings.
